About Barbara McLeod

Barbara was born in Manchester, Jamaica. Raised by an aunt in a privileged life while her 6 siblings were raised by her mother who she saw occasionally.

She came to England in 1965 and trained as a nurse in Cambridge. Worked in Great Ormond Street and St Stephens’s hospital as well as in the community. Barbara experienced racism at work and when trying to get accommodation.

Barbara worked nights and raised her children with little support. She challenged education
authorities to get her son into his school.
